Les Editions Hatier bank on the interactive textbook with Jouve’s help

Within the framework of their strategic development, Les Editions Hatier have always positioned innovation at the core of their values.

Under the direction of their Editorial Management, Les Editions Hatier have decided to launch an unrivalled project, proposing interactive textbooks which compliment traditional paper textbooks to educational institutions. These textbooks are installed directly onto the hard disk of computers (Windows, Mac, Linux) or are provided on a simple USB stick. The digital title offers operational insights into new methods of distributing knowledge.

One of the challenges facing Hatier was to design interactive and enriched digital works and not simply electronic reproductions of paper textbooks. One of the technical difficulties of the project consisted of producing the paper and digital versions simultaneously, in the same production chain, yet all the while maintaining profitability.
Aiming to guarantee the success of this ambitious project, Hatier wished to work with a specialist supplier in the production of multimedia products, and chose the Jouve Group. Selected for their expertise and their ability to manage complex typesetting and digital development jobs, Jouve set up a studio for multi-platform typesetting and created, in close collaboration with Les Editions Hatier, a rich and innovative interactive textbook.
To respond to Hatier’s requirements the Jouve team developed a progressive and user-friendly textbook reader which allows access to the content of all the interactive textbooks offered by Hatier.
Hatier now benefits from a unique production infrastructure for its paper and digital works and from a universal reader which allows access to all their interactive textbooks, both current and future.
Already operational, this project allowed the production of the two first titles (available since fall 2009): Histoire-Géographie 6ème et Mathématiques-Triangle 6ème. The interactive textbook allows the user to incorporate and exchange all the resources with the aim of creating personalized lessons. This launch is a major event, and an indication of the changes to come in the world of educational publishing to which Jouve has contributed via its investments in R&D.
Combined with paper textbooks, these two digital works bring numerous advantages to teacher and pupil alike. Students can use their textbook to profit from all the interactive elements including videos, animated slides, and audio summaries. Teachers also gain numerous educational aids including personalized slideshows, animated documents and regional blogs. For more interactivity, projections can be annotated thanks to a graphic palette.

  • Technical Information:
The typesetting studio and the textbook reader were conceived internally by Jouve’s teams using high performance tools including InDesign, Flex, Flash and AIR.
